What Is a PET-CT Scan?
A PET-CT scan (Positron Emission Tomography – Computed Tomography) is a powerful diagnostic exam that combines two imaging technologies in a single session. The PET component measures metabolic and biochemical activity in the body, while the CT component provides detailed anatomical images. Together, they give your physician a complete picture of both function and structure.
During the exam, a small amount of radioactive tracer (radiopharmaceutical) is injected into a vein. The tracer travels through the body and concentrates in areas of high metabolic activity — such as cancer cells, inflamed tissue, or areas of abnormal brain function. The scanner then detects the tracer and produces detailed 3D images.

During Your Visit
What To Expect During a PET-CT Scan
The entire appointment takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Here is a step-by-step overview of what happens.
Check-In
Arrive 15 minutes early. Our staff will verify your ID, insurance, and physician's order, and review your health history.
Tracer Injection
A small amount of radioactive tracer is administered via IV. This is virtually painless and takes only a moment.
Uptake Period
You will rest quietly for 45–60 minutes while the tracer distributes throughout your body. Reading and resting are encouraged; avoid movement.
The Scan
You lie still on a padded table that moves slowly through the scanner. The scan itself takes approximately 20–30 minutes. The machine is open and quiet.
You're Done
You may leave immediately after the scan. The radioactive tracer naturally decays over approximately 4 hours — no special precautions are needed. Results are typically ready within 48 hours.
Important: Preparation Is Required
A PET-CT scan requires specific preparation starting the day before your exam. Failure to prepare correctly may result in rescheduling. Key points:
- Fast for at least 6 hours before your exam
- Low-carb, high-protein diet the day before
- No exercise for 24 hours before the exam
- No caffeine on the day of the exam
- Diabetic patients: call us for special instructions
- Plain water is allowed
